When we go shopping or walk into town, the temptation of fast food and quick snacks is lurking for us. We are wired for sweet and salt, because for our ancestors these flavors were scarce, yet provided a lot of calories and nutrients. Our environment changed drastically, but our taste didn’t keep pace with that change.

Fast food has a lot of refined sugars and empty calories. If ‘yummy’ is our only criterion to choose food, we won’t feel that ‘yummy’ ourselves over time.

Food with a load of calories, sugar and fat cost a lot of energy to digest. If you often feel tired, it might be a good idea to adjust your diet. Find out what the best food for energy is for you. 3 Healthy Breakfast recipes, although not for everybody

For 40+ years I had breakfast with solely fruit and a little fruit juice. You might think that is boring, but as the seasons change, the fruit choice changes as well. Because we only eat twice a day since a year or so, I wanted to change my breakfast to eat varied enough.

Searching “Healthy breakfast recipes” didn’t at first offer me the kind of breakfasts I was looking for. But determination always pays off as you know, so now I have added 2 breakfasts to the one I had. And I am still looking for variations.

Why is it so hard for me to decide on other breakfasts? Well, as I have described earlier I was raised on bread and sweets. Maybe, if I try really hard, I could eat an American or English breakfast, but at the moment the thought alone gives me the creeps. As I am sure that Anglo Saxons will shiver by the thought of eating just bread. Or fruit.

Food with a conscience is something most of us want more and more. We visit the supermarket and try to think beyond what we want on our plate. Yes, we want healthy food, but we also want to know where the food comes from.

However, the more we have to buy, the more difficult it is to keep track of our good conscience. That’s why I’ve made up some rules of thumb for ‘food with a conscience’.

When I lived at home with my parents this was totally different. We used to buy our food everyday. Most of the food was cultivated nearby. Now and then we went to a farmer to pick up food ourselves straight from the field.

Healthy Eating Habits?

In the Netherlands, when we were children, we ate 2 sandwiches with chocolate sprinkles or peanut butter for breakfast. The same for lunch. And at the end of the day between 5 and 6 pm the warm meal: potatoes, meat and vegetables.

The same every day.

Later, when Tom and I had our son and wanted to be a healthy family, we changed some of these habits. Only fruits for breakfast, sandwiches with cheese for lunch and more variation for the evening meals, alternating the usual Dutch food with rice, pasta, salads and such. Changing the time to a hipper 7 to 8pm.

It is obvious that the heavy stuff was digested at night. Now that we are aging we have a completely different opinion about whether that are healthy eating habits. We want to be both active and sleep well. Food plays an important role in accomplishing that.

I first experienced the importance of an open mind when I started to listen to music. Radio-pirates transmitted the music I preferred from their boats off the coast. With the little transistor I got for my birthday I was able to tune in on them.

But how did I know I preferred the ‘pirate’ music over classical music from the state sanctioned post-war distribution radio? Through my friends. They shared their excitement with me. And through the newspaper I read every morning. 

Of course, I wanted to identify myself with my friends through the music they liked. I wanted to be part of our group. However, very early I noticed how important it is to keep an open mind. And not just for music. I will explain how I found out and learned to keep an open mind.

For years I browsed the internet and read books about how to sleep better and faster. Although I am still not the gold medal winner of sleepers, my sleep did improve. And now that I am aging I am more and more convinced it is very important to sleep deep and long enough.

One of the fears of a lot of aging people is to get dementia. It sure is one of my fears. My father, grandmother and an aunt had Alzheimer’s. One of the reasons people can get it is through sleep deprivation. My father has been in shift work for years. Of course nobody knows if this was the cause why he got the disease.

Alzheimer’s is believed not to be hereditary. So it is not said that I shall have it. But as you can understand I want to do everything in my power to prevent it actively.

‘To eat healthy’, gets far more gravity in these days of confinement. That is because to sit at home all day comes with the imminent risk of over-eating and under-exercising.

It takes quite some self-discipline to eat healthy and to stay in motion when locked up inside four walls.

What is your ‘eating lifestyle’?

But what is ‘to eat healthy’? Does this mean that you eat healthy food and drink healthy? Most eat-professionals suggest certain food consumption behaviors. For example:

  • Chew your food well
  • Take and mark your time to eat
  • Drink enough water
  • Eat fresh produce 
  • Vary what you eat from one day to the other

Of course, most of us already try to balance our intake of calories, vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins. Some of us follow specific eating patterns. Such as the ketogenic and paleolithic diet. We think it’s worthwhile to study those patterns and to try them out.

The last 40 years Tom and I breakfast with fruits. Back then we didn’t vary a lot. One reason being there wasn’t that much available and the other one that we were not as much into trying new things as we are nowadays. Apple, orange and banana – that was about it.

My father had Alzheimer’s, so whenever I read or hear something about preventing this dreadful disease I am all eyes and ears. Blueberries are said to benefit your brain immensely, making me include them in my breakfast almost every day now.

When I was a child I hated spinach, cabbage, leek, lettuce and Brussels sprouts the most.* Do you see a resemblance in this row of vegetables?
I didn’t! Until I started this blog about green fruits and vegetables.

Unfortunately my mother was a really bad cook I am sorry to say. Don’t get me wrong, I love(d) my mother dearly. But it wasn’t until my husband started to be the cook in the house that I discovered that food – any food – can taste deliciously. And that I came to the conclusion that not only my mother, but I too am a very bad cook. 🙂

Yet it should have been a big advantage if I had eaten more green vegetables as a kid. For years I suffered from severe bronchitis and one of the major plus points of green food is its ability to dissolve mucus in the lungs!

Lottery or gamble? How to become financially healthy.

Lotteries are huge in Spain. You can buy them everywhere: in the small kiosks on every corner of the street, from the (usually handicapped) people that roam the terraces and restaurants, in the tobaccos and even from the presidente of our neighborhood association.

The biggest one is El Gordo, a Christmas lottery. The price money is about 2 billion euros. One ticket costs 200€, although you can buy a tenth of a ticket. It seems almost the whole of Spain is glued to the television screen when the result is announced.

Well, we are not too fond of lotteries and we don’t have a television either. So our Christmas Eve will be peaceful and quiet. 🙂
