Moving to a warmer climate did a great deal of good for my arthritis. And so did my exercises. Not just the specific exercises for my hands, but also the stretching, weight training, swimming, and walking.

There are 4 age-related health conditions that figure in my exercise zone: arthritis, cancer, heart disease, and mental health conditions. My diverse routine exercise program, with cardiovascular exercise, strength training, and stretching, is aimed at preventing these conditions to materialize or worsen.

Due to the current pandemic, I added a fifth health condition to my list: COVID-19. This is the disease you get from the SARS-CoV-2-virus. This disease is specifically dangerous for frail and vulnerable people. This disease made me realize the more that exercise also strengthens our immune system. The best prevention against any virus.

Does vaccination protect the herd in case of infectious deceases? This is open for debate. We, for instance dodge vaccination against seasonal influenza. This can lead to hilarious situations. 

At some point our GP’s system failed and we were called by mistake for the yearly flu jab. When I asked the assistant ‘How come?’, she responded: “Oh, that’s right. You’re flu refusers”. And yes, that’s how it is, we dodge the flu.

The importance of mobility is demonstrated by the enormous leap the quality of life of older people took over the last 20 years. This improvement is predominantly attributed to a denser public transport, cheaper cars, scootmobiles, rollators, improved electric wheelchairs, taxis-to-share and the like. 

Our quality of life is defined by our mobility. That sounds a bit odd from someone who spent a substantial part of his life in traffic jams and overcrowded trains. But there is another side of the coin. Another type of mobility that is even more important.

Adequate mobility is critical to a satisfactory old age. Although, satisfactory is not by definition healthy. Our mobility also depends on our physical condition. And a good physical condition is the result of an active life. If you want to stay mobile, stay active. If you want to stay active, stay mobile.

Digital health has seriously taken off during the past few years. But what is digital health? No computer, as yet, has been able to cure any ailments. Is digital health perhaps about those cute little digital dogs, called Aibo? They keep you company when you’re lonely.

Or is digital health about those numerous digital health-training programs for medical staff? Or the advanced computer storage and processing devices, without which no nurse or doctor would be able to perform their job. Even more complicated are surgical robots.

However, the digital headlines have most severely been hit by the speedy rise and vast amount of consumer digital health supporting systems. These systems fall in the category assistive technologies, about which I’ve written already very briefly.

When we were children, rarely we thought about health and fitness. Unless we got seriously ill, we lived without a care in the world. We ate junk food, played games for hours on end, and drank soda pops at midnight. And the best thing? We never had to pay for it. Our bodies were in superb condition no matter what we put them through!

As we get older, our thoughts invariably switch to our health. We realize that we simply cannot sustain a life of indulgence. We want to extend our life expectancy and be free of debilitating conditions, such as diabetes and osteoporosis.

So we have to get active and we have to keep fit.

Will we all and only eat oatmeal porridge in 2050?
The answer is yes if we are to believe a recent article in the German newspaper Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung. In 2050 10 billion people will inhabit the earth. The challenge is to stretch our agricultural capacities within the limits of our environmental capacities. If we can’t, we will all have to eat oatmeal porridge in 30 years.

Personally I am not a fan of porridge, let alone oatmeal porridge. Besides I am not sure that’s a healthy food. That’s why, in my personal view, it’s an obvious but also astoundingly interesting challenge to prevent the ‘oatmeal porridge catastrophe’.
