I have never been the sportive type. My husband Tom and I did an occasional walk during the week and for me that was enough. Until I sprained my ankle. The physiotherapist hammered into me that walking for health reasons is not a luxury, but a necessity. I really should take it more seriously.

He was right of course. There are so many benefits from something as simple as walking that I considered myself not too smart postponing it for such a long time. Nowadays I am addicted. 🙂

The benefits listed here are not only achieved through walking, but through any kind of exercise.

The main advantages of walking are that it is easy to do, cheap, as you don’t need an expensive gym subscription, and that it has a relatively low impact on the joints of our body.

The first time I heard about the health benefits of laughing was at a health seminar. The story went like this:

A man heard from his doctor that further treatment of his cancer was of no use and that his life prospects were about 3 months. He had a lot of money and no heirs, so he decided to spend his last days as pleasant as possible. 

He took up residence in a penthouse of a hotel with full board and access to the Humor Channel and watched funny movies and stand up comedians all day long.

After 3 months he was still alive. And also the next 3 months passed by without anything of importance happening. So he ran out of money, was kindly asked to pay the bill or else to leave the hotel, and returned to the hospital for a check-up.

His cancer was gone.

I wrote about turning loneliness actively around in How to make friends when you are older? And this article is about the dangers of sitting too long and how to prevent it.

Ever since I have my Oura ring I am aware of how much I spend my time sitting. Even though I consider myself an active person. Originally I bought the ring to give me insights in my sleep, but the ring collects a lot more data. Not just my active time, but also the inactive time.

Before wearing my ring I would have guessed my sitting time is about 8 hours a day. All the statistics say that is a healthy maximum. It turned out my average was an awful between 12 to 13 hours!

Does vaccination protect the herd in case of infectious deceases? This is open for debate. We, for instance dodge vaccination against seasonal influenza. This can lead to hilarious situations. 

At some point our GP’s system failed and we were called by mistake for the yearly flu jab. When I asked the assistant ‘How come?’, she responded: “Oh, that’s right. You’re flu refusers”. And yes, that’s how it is, we dodge the flu.
