To prevent health risks you need your social circle

When you’re aging and want to prevent health risks, you have to motivate your social circle as much as yourself. Even when you’re over 60, prevention of health risks pays off. However, such prevention does not come easy.

Prevention is a lifestyle intervention tool. For most of us our lifestyle is the consequence of a long and repetitive social process. That’s why it’s very hard to try to change your lifestyle on your own.

As much as yourself, you will have to motivate the social circles in which you participate. In this article I explain why, and offer some suggestions on how you can motivate your social circle to help you.

We don’t have to make an effort for 2 of the – probably most – deadly factors for an aging person: sitting too long and loneliness. I wrote about turning loneliness actively around in How to make friends when you are older? And this article is about the dangers of sitting too long and how to prevent it.

Ever since I have my Oura ring I am aware of how much I spend my time sitting. Even though I consider myself an active person. Originally I bought the ring to give me insights in my sleep, but the ring collects a lot more data. Not just my active time, but also the inactive time.

Before wearing my ring I would have guessed my sitting time is about 8 hours a day. All the statistics say that is a healthy maximum. It turned out my average was an awful between 12 to 13 hours!

3 Healthy Breakfast recipes, although not for everybody

For 40+ years I had breakfast with solely fruit and a little fruit juice. You might think that is boring, but as the seasons change, the fruit choice changes as well. Because we only eat twice a day since a year or so, I wanted to change my breakfast to eat varied enough.

Searching “Healthy breakfast recipes” didn’t at first offer me the kind of breakfasts I was looking for. But determination always pays off as you know, so now I have added 2 breakfasts to the one I had. And I am still looking for variations.

Why is it so hard for me to decide on other breakfasts? Well, as I have described earlier I was raised on bread and sweets. Maybe, if I try really hard, I could eat an American or English breakfast, but at the moment the thought alone gives me the creeps. As I am sure that Anglo Saxons will shiver by the thought of eating just bread. Or fruit.

Does vaccination protect the herd in case of infectious deceases? This is open for debate. We, for instance dodge vaccination against seasonal influenza. This can lead to hilarious situations. 

At some point our GP’s system failed and we were called by mistake for the yearly flu jab. When I asked the assistant ‘How come?’, she responded: “Oh, that’s right. You’re flu refusers”. And yes, that’s how it is, we dodge the flu.

We advocate a healthy lifestyle as the best protection against the flu. The reasons for people to dodge vaccination are always profiled negatively. Does this mean that we are dummies or just plain stupid?
