What is the Meaning of a Personal Legacy?

In the past I have been a caregiver. The last 10 years of my father’s life for both my parents. And after his passing another 10 years for my mother. The periods after their deaths were intensive times of reflection. 

What is the meaning of a personal legacy? What do I remember most about my parents? And as a consequence: what do I want to be remembered for later?

We probably all want to be remembered for great deeds, but are we actually setting anything in motion that indeed is great? How big are our dreams and what efforts do we take to accomplish them?

Being grateful everyday pays off

The other day I had a really bad mood. Almost the whole day. When I was finally able to shrug off my anger, I realized it’s very rare nowadays that my bad moods last for such a long period.

In my journal I write down on a daily basis all the things I am grateful for. As with everything new this was harder in the beginning then it is now. It used to cost me a lot of energy to think of even one thing I was grateful for. Now a list of 5 to 10 items is an easy job to write down at the end of the day.

Through the years everybody encounters hardship. It’s part of life. The big question is: what do you do in these moments of need. Will you sit in a corner and feel sorry for yourself? Will you go on as if nothing is the matter? Or will you grab yourself by the shoulders and shake yourself up?

I have been the caregiver of my parents for 2 decades. While being an entrepreneur and aging myself as well this took a toll on me. At times I was so tired I couldn’t imagine feeling joyful and happy.

Yet I chose to shake myself up. It wasn’t easy, I must admit. The main obstacles were internal. This little voice in my head said: “You can’t do it”, “You’re too old”, “You’re a woman” or “Everybody has a hard time now and again”.
